Where to ride

Six places built for a Vespa.

Cobbles you would not walk twice, coast roads with nowhere to park a car, and back lanes a scooter reaches at exactly the speed you want to see them.

Rome by Vespa

In Rome the only real question is who drives.

Same cobbles, four different mornings: a sidecar with a driver and a gelato stop, a pillion seat behind a guide, your own keys for the day, or the whole bike to yourselves.

Tuscany

Chianti is the reason people learn to ride.

Out of Florence the tarmac narrows, the cypresses line up and the next two hours are gear changes between vineyards. Most rides break for lunch at a farm and a tasting after it, which is why the six-hour version is the one worth taking.

Florence Vespa Tour: Tuscan Hills and Italian Cuisine

Follow guides such as Leo, Chris, Alex, or Ado from Florence into the Tuscan hills on an automatic Vespa. After a safety test, ride past Piazzale Michelangelo and Galileo’s former area, stop at San Miniato al Monte, then share bruschetta, pasta, cheese, salami, and wine at a country estate. Fiat alternatives are available if riding is not suitable.

Vietnam and Cambodia

In Hanoi the Vespa is how dinner arrives.

Southeast Asia rides differently. You sit behind a driver on a restored fifty-year-old bike, and the route is a run of pavement kitchens, a train line with a street built around it and a river road out of the city. Cambodia swaps the traffic for red dirt and temples at sunrise.

The money

What a Vespa tour actually costs.

Every ride on the site grouped by price. The gap between a lap of the centro and a day in the hills is mostly lunch and hours.

Under $50 a head

Ninety-minute city laps, the Asian evening rides and half a day on a rented bike.

$50 to $150

The standard: a sidecar morning in Rome, a Hanoi food run, a half day through the hills.

$150 and upward

Full days with lunch and tastings, private guides, and the Amalfi coast road end to end.

Before you turn the key

What a Vespa tour asks of you: a licence, or nothing at all.

Sidecar and pillion rides need closed shoes and that is the whole list. Take the keys yourself and the operator wants a full licence, a passport for the deposit and long trousers, because the exhaust sits where your calf does. Helmets come with the bike. Rain is the one thing that moves a departure, so book the morning slot.

Only on two wheels

Three rides that do not work in a car.

A chair bolted to the side of a scooter, a Chianti road too narrow for a coach, and a Hanoi pavement kitchen you can only reach by pulling up at it.

Rome, from the chair

The Sidecar

The sidecar puts you a foot off the road with nothing between you and the Colosseum, and it solves the two things that stop people riding in Rome: the licence and the traffic. A driver takes the one-way systems and the tram tracks, you take the photographs. Most run ninety minutes to three hours, and nearly all of them stop for coffee or gelato somewhere with a view, because that is half the point.

Tuscany at forty

The Chianti Loop

You ride your own bike here, usually after ten minutes of practice in a car park, and the roads between Greve and Panzano were built for exactly this speed. The classic day is four hours of riding split by lunch at a farm and a tasting of Sangiovese poured by whoever made it. Automatic scooters are standard, a car licence is enough in Italy, and the operator follows in a support car for anyone who would rather sit it out.

Hanoi after dark

The Army Vespa

Hanoi runs its food rides on restored Vespas from the sixties and seventies, some of them ex-army, all of them loud. You ride pillion behind a guide, which is the only sane way to meet that traffic, and stop four or five times: a pavement grill, a bun cha kitchen, egg coffee on a balcony, the train street if the timetable allows. Two and a half hours, and you do not need to eat again.

Book before you fly

Four Vespa rides that will not wait for you.

Most of this can be arranged the night before. These four run on small fleets, fixed departures and a season, and they are the ones people miss.

  1. 01Vespa Sidecar Tour By Night with PickupA sidecar carries two people and an operator owns a handful of cars. Weekend mornings in Rome go first.
  2. 02Chianti Vespa Tour with Lunch from Florence & E-car OptionThe harvest rides in September and October fill months out, and winter closes most of the farm lunches they stop at.
  3. 03Siem Reap Evening Foodie Vespa Tour / Tuk Tuk AvailableNight rides leave at one hour, set by the sunset. There is no later slot to move to.
  4. 04The BEST Private Amalfi Coast Vespa TourThe coast road is single file most of the summer. Only the early departures get ahead of the coaches.
The Italian fortnight

Rome, the coast, then Tuscany: two weeks of riding that makes sense.
